Hi %%First Name%

Yes indeed, I am so inspired by this wonderful herb class video we have in postproduction from famed herbalist Brigitte Mars. I’m now walking around my neighborhood and seeing that highly nutritious edible plants are everywhere.

My friend Felicia, editor of LA Yoga magazine, left a facebook comment about how nutritious Purslane is. I thought to myself, “what is purslane?”

I have these weeds that grow in my garden incessantly, as weeds do. Every time I pulled them up from the ground, I thought, “What is this plant? This plant would be a good plant to make plastic from, very emollient….”

To tie it all together, I was at the farmers market on Monday and I saw a big bundle labeled Purslane. Yah! The crazy strong weed in my garden is purslane! Purslane is a good source of Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6 and Folate, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Manganese. Why would I want to ever remove it unless I want to eat it? Now, I go into my garden and harvest just enough purslane for the smoothie recipes I’m sharing with you below.

For your organ health which creates your beauty; recent research has confirmed that purslane is one of the best vegetable sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Why pay money for fish oil when you can grow your own Omega-3 fatty acids as part of your edible landscaping? (or...depending on where you live, just walk around the neighborhood and take what you need.)

The powerful realization is; there are so many ways we are provided for that we don’t even realize. Here I have a plant that is considered a Superfood growing abundantly without resources of water or effort to tend. I go to the store and spend a lot of money on my superfoods, without knowing some jewels are growing right in front of me.

Purslane represents edible landscaping at its best: it's free, and there's no work involved in growing it. The only thing keeping purslane from its rightful place in edible landscaping is an outdated logic that says, "Purslane is a weed; therefore, it must be eradicated from my landscape!" I think purslane is beautiful. It’s not actually a weed, it’s a succulent. So it’s nice and soft for the kids or dog to play on. It doesn’t have to be watered or mowed.

I remember my dad always saying begrudgingly, “I have to mow the lawn.” How nice it is to remove that task. Plus, It’s important to realize that the fumes from the burning fuel get into your body. If you can smell something, you are taking it into your body. Why don’t we have solar lawnmowers already? OH, I bet we do. I will look that up. If anyone hears about companies wisely using sun, wind, plants, etc, in their technologies, feel free to let me know about them.

Now, for a real treat!...

Flower Smoothie

2 marigolds- petals only

2-3 hibiscus flowers

handful of purslane, leaves, stem, roots, all of it.

1 Tbsp raw honey

I apple

1/2 lemon (I blend with peel on)

3 cups water or sun tea. I used a white blueberry tea. {I put hibiscus flowers into the sun tea jar too while it sits in the sun, creating a flower essense. I also put rose quartz crystals in the sun tea jar)

Blend together sun tea with flowers, purslane, fruits and honey, enjoy!

This literally tastes like the beauty it is. You can eat the entire hibiscus flower. You can use rose petals or violets too.

All of these flowers have powerful medicinal effects. Violets are cancer fighting. Marigolds improve eyesight. Hibiscus helps in reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and excess weight. Remember, these bright colors in nature signify high levels of anti-oxidants, and powerful nutrition.

Just looking at my clear glass water pitcher with beautiful pink hibiscus flowers floating in it puts me in a light and grateful mood. God’s beauty softens the heart, doesn’t it?

Make sure you are eating flowers that haven't been sprayed. You don't want to eat flowers from a flower market, unless you know they are grown organically. It's always best to simply pick a couple flowers from your yard or from your neighborhood right before you want to eat them. They have the most vitality right after picking. Enjoy this. Brigitte reminds us that flowers are the sex organs of the plants, so if you want to enliven your sexual side, eating flowers is a great idea:)

Putting flower petals in your salads or in your chia seeds for breakfast is a great idea too. YUM! I'm totally enjoying edible flowers.
